Ottawa art lovers get treats for January

Welcome 2012! If your New Year’s resolution is to get out more around the city - Ottawa is playing host to a wealth of interesting art exhibitions and events that will be sure to fuel creative fire over the next few (chilly) weeks.

Preternatural continues with video installations and larger-than-life drawings by visiting artist Shin Il Kim at Patrick Mikhail Gallery. If you missed the opening reception last Friday, you still have a few weeks to linger in these conceptual spaces – it’s well worth the trip. Be sure to spend time with Invisible Masterpiece, a video made from 708 pressed line drawings that have been animated at 30 frames per second.

Throughout the month, Gallery 101 invites you to witness a variety of public performances by artist Immony Men, in conjunction with the exhibition Bureaucracy. Self-described idea guy/inventor, quirky mockartist, scribbler, rascal, non-smoking cyber luddite and grand amateur Rene Price will also have work up at the gallery. Stop by on Friday, January 13 for the vernissage and meet the artists.

On the same night, Red Wall Gallery at the School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa (SPAO) will also be hosting a vernissage of photographic work by Pedro Isztin. Study of Structure and Form continues Isztin’s search for beauty and intimacy in the natural world through shape and design.

Since mid-November, the Carleton University Art Gallery has been exhibiting People Like Us: The Gossip of Colin Campbell. On Saturday, January 14, curator Jon Davies will join Peggy Gale, Lisa Steele and moderator Penny McCann (director of SAW Video) for a panel discussion on the legacy of Colin Campbell’s video work. Come early (the discussion gets underway at 2pm but the gallery opens at noon) and familiarize yourself with Campbell’s alter egos Art Star, The Woman From Malibu, and Anna – a Belgian critic devastated by the death of her lover.

On until January 29, the Monet brothers are displaying work for their first-ever group show at Cube Gallery. O Brothers, Where ART Thou includes photo-collage, oil, acrylic, and encaustic painting, as well as work made by eldest brother, Dennis, who passed away in 1983. If contemporary photography is more your style, make sure to see Les Autres by Gert Jochems at La Petite Mort Gallery (be warned – some content NSFW). Somewhat curious, sometimes ambiguous - Jochems has created a series of portraits that confront, provoke, and inspire. Les Autres is on display until January 29.
