Hair Treatment Products Cause Cancer

A study conducted by the Dermatology Department of the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa has found that many hair treatment products contains dangerous cancer causing substances. The study revealed some startling results which indicated that many hair products manufactured by Brazil based companies contain very high amounts of carcinogenic formaldehyde. In these products, the level of carcinogenic formaldehyde was found to be five times higher than the legal limit.

Usually, formaldehyde is a substance which is found in its liquid state, formalin, in most cosmetic products. The same liquid turns into a dangerous and unstable gas, when the hair products are heated for hair treatment. The gas can cause a lot of health problems when it is inhaled by people. Even low levels of this gas can cause problems such as eye and skin irritations, pregnancy disruption or dizziness. Exposure to higher levels of formaldehyde can lead to blood and respiratory cancers such as lymphomas and leukemia.

The study conducted by UCT has been an eye opener for those who have thought that such so-called natural hair products made by some Brazilian brands are safe. This study was published in the February 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatologists. Nonhlanhla Khumalo headed this study and disclosed its findings. However, he did not disclose the names of the brands whose products were founded to contain higher levels of the dangerous substance known as formaldehyde.

The most interesting fact revealed in this study is that some of these hair products were labeled as "formaldehyde-free". The consumers were clearly being misled by the manufacturers. The side-effects of these hair treatment products have been noticed by consumers as well as hair stylists. The hair stylists, who frequently work with these products, have noticed that they can cause dizziness and burning sensation in the eyes.
