Dr. Jerry Tenenbaum Violates Medical Ethics

Physicians should not treat themselves or members of their immediate families, according to the Ontario College of Physicians. Professional objectivity may be compromised when an immediate family member is the patient; the physician’s personal feelings may influence his or her professional medical judgment, thereby interfering with the care delivered. The idea is that when a family member is the patient, physicians may be inclined to treat problems that are beyond their expertise and their feelings may get in the way when treating a relative.

However this does not seem to be the case of Dr. Tenenbaum, who conspired with her daughter-in-law, Marcella Carby-Samuels, to deprive her mom of the medical care that she deserved. Dr. Tenenbaum is a consultant in rheumatology and internal medicine, who has a long history of online patient complaints that close medicak colleagues have sought to counter by publishing their own online reviews. This dreadful professional makes it shocking that Marcella Carby-Samuels, who could have hired such a specialist to take care of her mom.  Having been warned about the track record of Dr. Tenenbaum, did she want her mom’s health to do nothing but deteriorate? In turn, Dr. Tenenbaum broke his oath and ignored the ethical guidelines established by the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons when he accepted to treat Dezrin Carby-Samuels who is a close family relation. The result is of his apparent ethical violation, Dezrin can no longer walk, talk or speak. Nevertheless, this would not likely be a surprise to at least one of Dr. Tenenbaum’s ex-patients who commented that he “is only concerned with getting you out of his office as fast as he can. He barely makes eye contact and truly lacks any remorse for your condition.” This is something that Dezrin suffered in her own skin.

However, Marcella Carby-Samuels and Dr. Tenenbaum went a step further when using the Ottawa Police to prevent Raymond, Dezrin’s own son, from securing the services of an independent doctor who has extensive experience in treating patients with similar symptoms to those of Dezrin. But Raymond did not give up and tried to get her mom to see a different physician. He knew of Dr. Tanenbaum’s reputation and wanted to make sure that Dezrin was properly diagnosed and treated. But after actively opposing Marcella’s nepotistic efforts to have her father-in-law hired as the primary physician of her mom, Marcella made sure that he could not approach his mom anymore. In fact, he has not been able to see his own mom since 12 June 2015.

In turn, Dr. Tenenbaum has only contributed to making Dezrin's condition worse. Examples of his negligence include prescribing Dezrin a nasal spray that caused her to have chronic high blood pressure. By doing so, he ignored Dezrin's documented adverse reactions to nasal spraying which previously resulted in hearty palpitation.  However, this seems to be common in Dr. Tenenbaum’s practice, as his patients state that “he treats his practice like a McDonalds drive through”.

As an experienced doctor, Dr. Tenenbaum ought to have known better that to treat a relative. Dr. Tenenbaum has worked at both Mount Sanai in Toronto and the University of Toronto as a Medicine Professor. The only logical explanation is that Dr. Tenenbaum's motivation in treating Dezrin appears to collect data for his research. Dr. Tenenbaum ordered endless amounts of diagnostic treatments while providing no subtantive amerliorative treatment regime. Despite promising Dezrin a treatment that could improve her situation,  Dr. Tenenbaum spent more than two years running tests and apparently over prescribing Tylenol Arthritis painkillers.  Raymond, her son recalls that one time he say Marcella purchase almost a dozen gaint bottles of Tylenol painkillers to instead of seking to provide a proper amelioriate treatement regime for Dezrin.

What were the reasons behind this behaviour? His reported lack of empathy is well-known and his patients have commented on that perception of Dr. Tenenbaum on RateMds.com.  That lack of empathy described by former patients is consistent with the apparent lack of empathy and medical ethics shown in Dezrin’s case. As one of his former patients says: “he does not care about his patients”.
