Ottawa Weekend roundup -- Easter egg hunt edition

The Easter weekend – regardless of when it falls – always feels like the first official spring weekend. In that vein, we’ve got some spring-inspired events lined up for you: ‘mo diggity returns for a post-winter dance party, it’s the Fuzzy Bunny Slaughterhouse Easter Extravaganza, and both the Diefenbunker and the Agricultural Museum will have hunts for chocolate.

Art shows get sassy this weekend, as Patrick John Mills tells you to Quit Your Job, and Sue Ukkola’s show is None of Your Beeswax. It’s also the first Thursday art walk down Wellington tonight, it being the first such day in April. You should also catch Erin Shirreff’s Available Light show down at Carleton, where they’ve also got a historical French print exhibit (all about news consumption in the 18th century) and a survey of Milutin Gubash’s work.

If you’re in the mood for some pop-inspired indie rock, head over to Zaphod’s to see Toronto band Paint, along with We Surrender and Right by Midnight. Fans of local music and metalcore should head to Mavericks tonight, where Ottawa’s Be The Saviour will take the stage along with Montreal’s Skip the Foreplay. B.A. Johnston’s acoustic melodies will fill up Irene’s on Friday. We get more Toronto indie rock with Wildlife and Topanga at Mavericks Saturday, and some haunting sounds with Adaline at Zaphod’s. No excuses for not dancing this weekend – the Mackenzie Rhythm Section is throwing a party to celebrate their latest cd release, and across town it’s Stars on 45 at Raw Sugar. If you’re up for an across-the-bridge adventure, be at Le Petit Chicago Saturday night for the lyrical sounds of Hôtel Morphée. And, after 15 years in hiding, Bob Loblaw is back to rock the city once again. To wrap up your long weekend, Jordan Klassen and Andy Shauf will be playing down at Zaphod’s Monday night.

At the theatre, East of Berlin continues at the GCTC (check out our review from Andrew Snowdon). The Communication Cord is halfway through its run at the Gladstone (Andrew reviewed it, too), while Self Help wraps up at Ottawa Little Theatre this weekend.

And if spring just isn’t enough for you? Get a head start on summer by getting your camping plans in order. Who wouldn’t look forward to staying in a yurt?
